Closing the door on freedom

Reader comment on item: The Rot in Our [Canadian] Universities

Submitted by Fergus Schappert (Canada), Jan 30, 2003 at 22:33

It was depressing to read Mr. Pipes' column today, however the news was certainly not unexpected.

The moral and ethical decline in Canadian universities has long been apparent, and with the advent of neo-gauchery such actions are to be expected. The teachers of this creed are so sure of their rectitude that they need not condescend to hear the arguments of others, and will brook no criticism. My history professor believes that history is subjective: What an interesting thought? No need to provide evidence or be objective; as long as it goes along with far-left ideology it is acceptable. It seems gauchism and suppression of freedoms go hand in hand. These days, the saying of leftists seems to be true, "Truth is relative," perhaps not relative because to them it is nonexistent.

I ask all people to stand up for what they believe in. To uphold the freedom of speech of all people, not just of some. To maintain standards of equality and liberty across our once great nation, and to act in all ways with justice, honor, objectivity, and truth. Those who do not share these beliefs do not deserve positions of honor, certainly not in our universities.
