Reader comment on item: The Rot in Our [Canadian] Universities

Submitted by John Williams (United States), Jul 20, 2008 at 01:26

Perhaps is Mr Pipes is so concerned with matters of Freedom of Speech, debate etc , he could give us a reason why the film by John Pilger about the massacre of Civilians at Sabra and Shitalla (most of them women and children and old men) has never been shown on any television in the USA. The massacre was facilitated by the Israeli officer in charge, Ariel Sharon. If freedom of speech is so important why is it this film and others have never been shown in the USA. The only view that is allowed to be shown is one that is favorable to Israel and portraying all Palestinians to terrorist. Where is the protest about this.

Daniel Pipes replies:

Freedom of speech does not mean the right to have one's film shown on national television. It does mean that once a station has decided to show it, it have the ability to do so.

By analogy, I do not say my freedom of speech is abridged when I am not invited to a university. Only when I am invited, and then cannot speak.
