Reader comment on item: How Terrorism Obstructs Radical Islam

Submitted by SULTAN (Turkey), Aug 23, 2005 at 13:30

Dear Mr Pipes,

I am glad to read your articles. But I have some questions. What do you mean by radical islam? Radical islam can only be violent and nothing else. So it has to be illegal. How can Mr Tayyip Erdoğan represent lawful, political radical islam? True, he is very religious. His wife and daughters are closed and they wont drink alcohol. But just because of this how can he be a leader of radical islam?

Also why islam has to be political? Do you think that majority of muslims desire and spend energy and time to convert all non muslims in the world to İslam.I personally wouldnt like to see all the world in islamic culture. This Would be very boring. Terrorism has nothing to do with İslam. Unless the west can accept this I will allways believe that westerners are using islam for their own benefits. Arabs will always want elimination of israel. Do you think that this is because of their religion or because even after so many years they still want to get their occupied lands back. And why also islamic country Turkey does not join to her fellow islamic arabs about İsrael accept saying few words about it.because it is not her problem. Why does no Arab country recognize Turkish Cypriots.? Why in turkey there is a great anger against Mr Bushs administration (number one in the world) to the contrary of great love to mr Clintons time. İs this Because we are muslims?Or because for the benefits of our own country that we dont want Iraq to break into three parts. And why real radical islamic country İran dont say much against USA about Iraq. Because they are very happy about the occupation and they are dreaming to unite with some part of it in the future. Islam is not politics. Also el Quaidas are only bloody ... terrorists. They are not muslims. great majority of us just see islam as a personal relationship with Allah. Thats all.
But one thing is true for sure. That this terrorism is doing very bad in every way for the world as a whole.

Daniel Pipes replies:

I mean by "radical Islam" an attempt to impose the Shari`a via governmental power. That can be achieved, as I suggest in this article, via violence or politically.
