Radical Islam is Inherently Self-Destructive

Reader comment on item: How Terrorism Obstructs Radical Islam

Submitted by Alex (United States), Aug 25, 2005 at 12:30

I think that with the unprecedented bowing to Islamists by Western and non-Western countries now occuring in places from Gaza to Iraq to the Phillipines, Islamists will interpret Western offers to become a part of mainstream politics and institutions in two ways, both of which are dangerous in the short-term for the West, but deadly in the long-term for Islamism in general. First, Islamists will view appeasement as weakness and, therefore, as a sign of encouragement for jihad. Second, they will see offers for negotiation as a Western-controlled ploy that disrespects their fighting honor, thus further spurring them towards jihad. Indeed, if one goes to www.debka.com, one will see that Islamist propaganda has lately reached the type of crescendo that one would expect before an apocalyptic final battle (I predict the beggining of Ramadan to be the approximate start-date).
