Christians Killed Jews?

Reader comment on item: Anti-Semitism Evolves

Submitted by Mark Fisher (United States), Feb 16, 2005 at 13:11

Mr. Pipes stated that "historically Christians killed most Jews." This is a very misleading and inaccurate statement, .... I hope he isn't implying that Hitler was a Christian. But even if he isn't, I would like to point out that Jesus Christ was a Jew, and so were all of his original followers. An anti-semitic Christian is oxymoronic and anti-Christian since such a person is acting CONTRARY to the teachings of the founder of Christianity, and against the Jewish lineage of Jesus Christ himself. Therefore, it is quite clear that anyone bearing the title "Christian" who murders or persecutes Jews is clearly acting outside of the Christian faith.

Therefore, it is not only inaccurate but unjust to call such people "Christians."

On the other hand, the murderous actions of anti-semitic muslims are wholly consistent with the example and teachings of the founder of Islam.

Sincerely,
Mark S. Fisher

Daniel Pipes replies:

How to place Hitler and the Nazi movement, as Christian or anti-Christian, is too complex a problem for me to address here.

Suffice to say, to justify my assertion, that Muslims did not engage in the sort of pogroms that were common in Christian countries from the Crusades until the 20th century.
