Reader comment on item: Anti-Semitism Evolves

Submitted by John Schwartz (Germany), Feb 15, 2005 at 13:45

Hi Daniel,

This article is a bit too negative in my opinion. We live in a hate filled society and just about every grouping I know has its roster of hatemongers. I wonder if every outburst of anti Jewishness is symptomatic of a rising anti-semitism or symptomatic of a rising bar of hatred in our society in general. It seems to me to be the latter. I am Jew living in Germany who honestly feels that I have suffered less anti-semitism here than I would had I stayed in the States. Maybe my eyes are glued wide shut.

Of course, I see the extreme right growing, but their main platform is not anti-semitic but rather a political call to revisionist history, as exemplified by their march in Dresden this week. It may be relevant to put these attacks in perspective.

Where I do agree with you 100% is on the threat from the Moslem community here.

Finally, don't you think that if the new PLO leaders create a mood of nonviolence that it may have the positive effect of enabling the Palestinians to see the benefits of living peacefully with Israel-and this may create a positive dynamics for change. I may be delusional in your opinion, but I feel that the world is better with Arafat gone.

All the best,

John Schwartz
