Raju, You're right that a heritage of Taquiyaa = an untrustworthy & deceitful heritage, but as the book suggests, all war depends on the success of deceit. The ideal situation would be when no one is at war -- nor wants to be at war. But I have to say that a cardinal difference between Muslim zealots and me is their interpretation of the Battle of Badr -- They feel it was a Allah-inspired attack on their persecutors; I feel it was a sneaky murderous assault on Muhammad's old companions and friends for political and material and carnal gain.

In this lies the heart of the difference between Islamic fundamentalism and Western idealism -- Fundamentalism cloaks every story surrounding Muhammad in benighted glory, and Western idealism finds his tactics and lifestyle filled with hypocrisy and horror, sprinkled with wisdom and kindness. And yet this fundamental difference between the faith of muslims, and the multiple beliefs of philosophical Western liberalism plays way above the heads of the average Westerner and the average Muslim.

And to win the clash of civilizations, if it is even possible for non-Muslims to ever do, it would eb to get the average Muslim to see that the core beliefs of his or her Faith has less to do with the peculiarities of the "Prophet"'s behavior and idiosyncracies than with the core message of a caring and merciful god, and a life that aims toward charity and egalitarianism.

Unfortunately, historical Islam has seldom matched its peaceful and egalitarian ideals in history -- most times it has been stratified (although, to my untrained eye, the top 30% haves and bottom 30% havenots in Muslim cultures seem to have been less stratified than the haves and havenots of India's Hindu societies of of Europe's feudal societies) and violent.
