The Western Left has almost been against Israel - and I do not understand Jewish support for the Left.

Reader comment on item: A Rapid and Harsh Turn against Israel
in response to reader comment: Anne; Why did Jews vote for Obama

Since WWII Jews the world over have apparently supported left to far-left causes. I have always found this incomprehensible, since it was already clear, say in 1980, that the left will eventually side against Israel. There was always this undercurrent about this, but I think the Left is now finally taking an overt stance against the idea of a Jewish state (rather than a civil democracy) in Israel.

In 1994 when Mandela's ANC, with tremendous support from the Western Left (who co-opted the West into the effort), defeated the white government in SA, I told a Jewish friend that the Western Left will now look for a new target, and it is obvious that Israel will be it. This process took longer to take hold, but I think that it is now abundantly clear that the Western Left and Israel are on a collision course.

The strangest issue about all of this, remains the support that many Jews in the West gives to the Left (and by extension, to the push against Israel). This is remarkable, but what I find even more remarkable, is the extent to which some Jews are taking explicit positions against Israel themselves, almost as if modern politics have "turned" them politically in this way. Recently, someone (a highly educated man) called Israel the last remaining colonial state, and that she will not survive much longer. This view is becoming quite typical, and it does not bode well for Israel.

Obama's politics on Israel is the least of the problems for the Jewish nation -- what is more important, is the way in which Western and International perceptions are turning.
