Reader comment on item: A Rapid and Harsh Turn against Israel
in response to reader comment: Balance Requires Two Parts

Destiny, God given - all root problems of this conflict. Israel has no more destiny to this land then does the arabs. This conflict is rooted in these religious fantasies of god given ownership - they own it no more than the crusaders owned it - or Sulieman owned it - these are myths both political and religious. You stated, " it is more than religion that gives Israel her destiny to the land, that of a history being denied for the lack of understanding how it is Israel was able to be reinstated by her Almighty God" a religious statement couched as a non-religious statement. These appeals to god are of no more rational value in this debate than the Ayatollah in Iran saying the recent election was a confirmation from god. I know it is hard for you all to do but to paraphrase a song "what's god got to do with it".

I believe the existence of the state of Israel is important not because god wants it but because there is a moral justification for a Jewish homeland, because it's very existence is an example to the rest of the Middle East of what could be economically, because it is the best hope for leading the middle east into the 21st century.

I am turkish and raised muslim but still see Israel in its economy and in its democracy as the greatest example of what could be for other Middle Eastern countries. But greater Israel no, Zionist Israel with its expansionary desires no - the Arabs must recognize the right of Israel to exist and the Israeli's must recognize the limitations of their reach. Religion offers neither side anything except heartache and bloodshed and I for one think that Allah or God or whatever you prefer to call it has no interest in anyone's religion or for that matter their claims to a piece of land.
