In much the same manner that the 8% (white) South African population ruled the 92% (black) majority, it may very well be that the nutjobs in charge of Iran do not fully represent the majority of the population. Iranians are wildly more cosmopolitan than Arabs, even though the far-right religious cooks make it seem like a majority position. Let's remember that we're dealing with an Islamic country. And that simply means that anyone breathing a whisper of criticism--even in their dreams--against Islam or the ruling party can end up disappeared and dead. Therefore, the only aspect of Iranian life that does not transform over is the Islamic aspect. In that sense, they will all seem like nutjobs, as Islam does not make much effort to present itself as being particularly civilized.

Now, as for the president of Iran, he may be crazy as a fox and a lot smarter than he gives us reason to believe, but in the end I truly agree with Mike: you do not negotiate with lunatics who deny the holocaust and make repeated inflammatory statements (e.g., Israel will soon disappear, etc.).

You kill them before they kill you. Then you get a good night's rest.
