Mike,

I appreciate your comments. However, I hold the position that human beings by their very nature are all slightly nutty, religious fanatics whether they be Christian, Muslim or whatever are just nuttier. In that I take this as a given this doesn't mean that they are irrational, they're rational just from an insane point of view. Yet, like all human beings they have set goals, desires and a will to power. Having those attributes makes them vulnerable to manipulation just like every one else. Too me the problem that currently exists is because we have our own nutjobs in positions of power who only see one way to address any given issue.

The old conservative attributes and strengths are nowhere to be seen. People like GW and his ilk think they are on a mission from God so they demonize their opposition whether domestic or foreign. They draw lines so firm that there is no possiblity to see options that exist. It is as if they find it easier to live in a world of constant fear than it is to try to deal with issues as they arise.

Even Mr. Pipes who I often enjoy reading and sometimes agree with seems more and more often to find it easier to be the 800lb gorrilla in the store than it is to be the trainer of the gorrilla. I consider myself to be an old fashioned Conservative with the basic tenet that human beings are by their nature imperfect creations and that means ALL human beings, myself included. If we accept that premise then they can be moved to positions that are more favorable to our nation.

It is a sad thing to see this great nation and its people operating in nothing but a climate of fear. Can these people hurt us - sure they can - as you say if someone is willing to die they can accomplish anything. Can they defeat us in the long run- not as long as we remain true to our basic beliefs and our understanding of the world. I learned a long time ago in Viet Nam the only thing fear gets you - is a mistake.
