Multilingual does not mean knowledgeable or wise

Reader comment on item: Arabist Snobs

Submitted by DonnT (United States), Nov 24, 2011 at 22:28

I lived in Switzerland for 20 years, where most people are somewhat multilingual, and where some people speak 5 or more languages, not just fluently, but virtually perfectly. Among the things I learned during those 20 years, is that speaking many languages sometimes just permits the speaker to say stupid things several different ways.

Speaking and reading Arabic may indeed be an advantage, but Sullivan't comments on the spelling of one term, could be likened to a critic of Shakespeare's, who, upon finding a misspelled word, declares the whole work a fraud.
