Reader comment on item: Not Stealing Palestine but Purchasing Israel

The fact that Zionists purchased some land is used often as a defense for the establishment of Israel. This argument would hold water if they had chosen to establish a Jewish state only on that land they had bought. Obviously it would have been impossible to have purchased the entire sea coast, the Negev, and the Galilee. Instead, this entire land was occupied by force after WWI by Great Britain which in turn gave control of it to the Zionists in 1948. Much is said of the cleverness and ability of the Israelis. Truth is, it was the strength of the British army, one of the mightiest in the world at that time, that made the founding of Israel possible. Without the British to protect them, the Jewish population would never have increased enough in order for them to fend off Arab resistance.
