When did "Palestine" exist?

My history of the Middle East is lax, since I don't really care, but I would argue the point that the British gave up on "Palestine" in 1948. According to my admittedly limited information (which I'm obviously not researching), there never was a Palestine. There were English colonies, French colonies, German colonies, Portuguese colonies across after. But where and when was there a "Palestine?"
