Reader comment on item: Is Prince Charles a Convert to Islam?
in response to reader comment: Is Prince Charles another wannabe Arab?

Well, I always wanted to learn Syraic--but the reason is that I'm interested in reading the Peshito version of the Bible and some of the Syrian and Mesopotamian Church Fathers. But I think I'll try to get my Hebrew and Biblical Aramaic (Ezra and Daniel) down first. I am also aware of the work done by someone who writes anonymously as Christoph Luxenberg, and am intrigued by what he says, even though I'm not so sure I know enough to truly evaluate his work.

As for the Qur'an, I'll trust that Yusuf Ali, Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall, and a few others did the best they could when they rendered it into English. From what I see from there work, no Christian who truly knows the Bible can accept Muhammad as a prophet or his book as a continuation of the biblical tradition.

My guess is that there are Muslims who truly have internalized what they were taught, and that probably impresses the not-too-well-catechized Mr. Charles Windsor who is probably like many another Western "seeker", who, having been told by the very foolish Herr Nietzsche that his God is dead, goes out to seek another.

But is Charles a Muslim? My guess is he isn't capable of fathoming more than the externals of Islam; just as he has not really fathomed what it is to be a Protestant Christian.

Finally, please do not think that my own attitude toward Prince Charlie's "faith" is anything other than a sort of disappointed sadness at someone who has lost what in many ways is a great heritage in British Christianity (for the record, I am a sort of pre-modern Reformed Christian ["Calvinist"] myself).
