campus role in the 60's was different

I generally agree with your outlook but in my view you're off base when you equate today's PC with campus dissent of the 60's. Today we're seeing academic apologies for 9/11; in the 60's we saw an exposure of defense policies that were ill-conceived and politically motivated. Even the major players of that era--MacNamara and Westmoreland--later recanted their roles in Vietnam and validated the positions earlier staked out by the university community. The campuses of the 60's were vital to a needed correction of American foreign policy, despite (or because of ) the fact that they publicly disagreed with official government policy.
