Who pays the salaries of most professors?Reader comment on item: From the Halls of Academia Submitted by Alex Uan-Zo-li (United States), Dec 30, 2002 at 22:52 Well, that's easy - we, the taxpayers. If we, the people, who employ those professors do not like what they say/teach/proclaim, we have all rights to fire them. Professors have all protections guaranteed by the first amendment, but they have no right to demand our financial support. I did not notice in the first amendment anything that says that freedom of speech must be financially supported by the taxpayers. Do not like US policy? Fine. Want our money? Sorry, no money from us. I think it's about time to stop the left-wing extremists from abusing the majority of americans. Majority also has rights, and deciding whom they will hire is one of them. We have to make those quasi-intellectuals feel responsibility before the folks who give them employment - they are not in the kindergarten anymore.Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
