Beauty is also a woman's right...

Reader comment on item: Affirmative Action in Beauty Contests?

Submitted by Ruthanne (United States), May 17, 2010 at 10:17

I think that one of the things that makes many of us feel sad about women in fundamentalist-Muslim societies is the prohibition of physical beauty. Whenever the Taliban moves into a new area, along with all the other damage, they immediately shut down the beauty shops. It's nice to see women who have come out of these societies compete freely, showing their beautiful hair and lovely forms for all to see and appreciate. I don't know if there's any affirmative action going on here, but I think it's nice to see an Arab woman in public without the usual giant black bag over her head and body.
