Reader comment on item: Affirmative Action in Beauty Contests?

Submitted by Apa (United States), May 17, 2010 at 11:12

You cite less than ten Muslim women who won beauty pageants in the last five years, and you're calling it "affirmative action"? Do you even understand how many of these pageants take place every year? A quick skim of Wikipedia for contests in the US, France, England and the so-called Big Four (Miss Universe, etc.) shows there are 26 yearly contests. Five of the winners were Muslim in the past five years, meaning 3% of the winners were Muslim. That means 97% of the winners were not. I'm not going to even try including the individual pageants on individual college campuses in the US, because it would be pointless.

There is no "affirmative action" going on here. These are intelligent, articulate women who compete against other women and win a beauty queen prize. They also happen to be Muslim.
