Muslims can excel, Islam can't. The guys you've listed above were, almost to a man, either critics of Islam or outright persecuted by the Islamic regimes under which they lived. They were in islam, but not of it. Individual muslims are often muslims because they have no choice and are (famously) not free to choose among religions except under threat of death. The alleged golden age of Islam died when the creativity of conquered civilizations sputtered out and Islamic dogma strangled achievement.
