Reader comment on item: How Many Muslims in the United States?
in response to reader comment: 0.4% of Americans are Muslim

Submitted by GWK (United States), Jun 9, 2009 at 22:02

Jim in Texas -- You said, "2009 U.S. Census say 0.4 of adults over the age of 18 are Muslim That would be 1,216,238 of the 2008 Census estimate of 304,059,074 total American."

Correction -- consider that Muslim women are likely to have over 5 children in their lifetime. Assuming that 250MM of Americans are over 18, then that would mean that there are ~1.2MM Muslims over 18, y.o in the USA, and that the # of under 18 Muslims would be about 5 x 1/2 MM. That adds another ~2.5 MM under 18 y.o. Muslims. That brings the ttal to 3.7MM. Consider, too, the likelihood that illegal immigrants avoid even being counted in Census records, and that total could well be double.
