Reader comment on item: How Many Muslims in the United States?
in response to reader comment: al andalus the utopian myth

Submitted by harry boyle (United States), Aug 16, 2011 at 20:48

First, let say both arab and jews are throughly semetic people, it is correct to say the problems that existed between jews and moslems were purely religious, and not racial as you stated. however you are correct in your statement of the myth of el andalus. during the 500 year occupation of both southern spain, southern italy, and portions of southern france, the arabs and berbers were anything but tolerant. Quite the opposite, they were brutal, and contributed nothing to civilization. Instead what they brought was destruction of churches, libraries, and what was left of the old roman infrastructure. No better fairy tale was ever told than the myth of el andalus.
