Reader comment on item: How Many Muslims in the United States?
in response to reader comment: 0.4% of Americans are Muslim

Submitted by Taj (United States), Jun 10, 2009 at 17:44

First, the reported table figure is not 0.4%, it's 0.6%

Second, the debate of how many Muslims there are is a moot argument for both sides. The only way we could get credible data is via the Census bureau and/or Immigration. Neither collect data on religion, so we are left with estimates.

Using market research data has its limitations in this regard since nearly 20% refuse to answer religion survey questions (hence, the census table's math of 100% of the adult pop. is clearly inaccurate since only 80% answered the question in the first place...

Most of the old research that is commonly cited have flaws, such as outdated data or poor methodology. Studies that employ a greater range of methodology have estimated in 2000-2001 a figure of 4-5 million. Given another 8 years, a figure of 6-7 million is a reasonable estimate.
