A great victory for Israel

Mr. Pipes,

Why are you telling that Israel lost the 2006 war? This is also self-imposed humiliation!

Isn't it that when an army (IDF) enters another country (Lebanon), pushing the terrorist back some 40 km and is there staying for some time, destroying the infrastructure of the invaded country (Hezbollah), and only left this country after 3 months, after a deal was done, this is called a victory?

That's what Israel did.

So where's is the defeat?

Every other army in the world would celebrate this as a victory. Where is the victory of the US and GB in Afghanistan? Do they say that they suffered a defeat? Where is the victory in Iraq? But US defines it as a succes...Only Israel was able in a very short time, in fact in 48 hours only, unprepared, to push back the Hezbollah some 40 km and over the Litani. But you, Mr. Pipes, define this as a defeat...

This was instead a true victory.

Daniel Pipes replies:

This is not the place for a such a complex argument, so I shall refer the reader to Efraim Inbar's definitive study, "How Israel Bungled the Second Lebanon War," in the Middle East Quarterly.
