DisagreeReader comment on item: Samir Kuntar and the Last Laugh Submitted by Eric (Israel), Jul 22, 2008 at 00:41 We got a fairly good deal: Almost no release of Palestinians. I thought we should have given them Kuntar in the Tanenbaum exchange. It might have saved a lot of lives and celebrations in Lebanon. The more we raised his value, the more they can celebrate. The Yom Kippur War was in the first 30 years. I'd say the First Lebanon War was a low time, an unnecessary war with unattainable goals (a peace treaty with Lebanon, which was actually signed with a puppet leader, and eliminating the PLO) that led to the first intifada and the creation of Hizbollah out of an oppressed Shiite population. We permanently stained our reputation by intentionally bombing civilian refugee camps, which we later helped rebuild. I was there and saw the destruction. We also saturation bombed Beirut. I was there. Because of all the dust and smoke you could barely see the sun before noon. Like an eclipse. We continued bombing even after Arafat agreed to leave. The US had to phone Arik Sharon to get him to stop the bombing. Our Gulf of Tonkin was an attack in London, claiming that it violated our cease fire with the PLO. Similarly we created Hamas to offset the PLO. We created a Christian fighting force that refused to fight except to slaughter women and children in Sabra and Shatilla. At least the army was well prepared for the invasion. The net result was worthless. We created the SLA which became refugees in Israel. Yes, we could still be in South Lebanon and Gaza. We have taught them that we only understand force. Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes. Original writing only, please.
