Reader comment on item: Samir Kuntar and the Last Laugh

Submitted by Rodni E. Chalet (United States), Jul 27, 2008 at 02:24

The question remain is why did the Lebanese of many denominations celebrate Kuntar's return even though he is an unrepentant child murderer?

Answer: somood wa tahadi = steadfastness and defiance! ...

A fact that Dr. Pipes often talks about that in order to succeed, Israel must teach the Arabs that they are the loser of such a conflict. This reality has only intensified Arabs enmity and hatred of Israel and as such they are willing to go to any extent not to cry "uncle" and to continue to defy Israeli superiority no matter the cost. Example, in the 2006 war the Lebanese Hezbollah organization sacrificed the lives of 1600 people as well the destruction of half of Lebanon to free Kuntar and the many corps of militants that Israel kept as bargaining chips!

I am afraid that as Israel is losing because its people have become too soft due to wealth and success as the above article partially suggest while the Arabs who endured so much thrashing and loses are becoming numb to the pain and are more determined to fight on! Thus, in the long run this is natural selection at its finest! One people are becoming soft and complacent because of success while the others are metamorphing and evolving into tough, relentless and resilient fighters willing to fight to the end no matter the cost to become successful!

Today we see Israel's prime minister meeting with the Syrians and talking about painful concessions (giving up the Golan) even though Syria is at it's weakest point, vacating Gaza, talking peace with the Palestinians and doing lopsided deals with an insignificant organization like Hezbollah while his country owns the most advanced weapons? Why? It is because the Israeli have grown accustomed to "pain killers" rather than surgeries to alleviate the pain of existence in such an inhospitable neighborhood they call home!

Only time will tell.
