Hijabs are worn for respect a sign of modesty... so no it is not like a prayer shawlReader comment on item: Hijabs on Western Political Women Submitted by Julie (United States), Jun 3, 2008 at 15:02 Muslim women wear hijabs (head scarves) to protect their modesty. No we (yes I am an American Muslim) do not wear it because we are forced, we choose to wear it. ... I do not teach Judaism because I do not fully understand it because I am not a practicing Jew. Why are you so afraid of a few women wearing a head scarf? ...do not believe in Jesus and his mother Mary who also wore a head scarf as a sign of modesty like Muslim women right? Should we be afraid of the virgin Mary too? ... What about the Christian women and Jewish women who cover their hair also for religious reasons?
