Reader comment on item: Hijabs on Western Public Women

Submitted by marion d s dreyfus (United States), Mar 23, 2008 at 21:42

Professor Pipes is right on, yet again. There is no need for Western women to don the controlling and subjugating appurtenances of the Arab/muslim female. Were these women to come to our shores, they would not, in the general run of things, don a bikini or a Brooks Brothers tailored suit.

There is no need nor expectation. One is hard put to justify these women, especially those on state business, assuming the unkoranic but widely adopted symbology of lesserhood--in Arabic: Dhimmi, and thus dhimmitude.

It is unfortunate that Turkey's longtime ban of donning the hijab has recently been rolled back. Studies have shown that countries where hijab is adopted become cauldrons for seething resentment against those who do not sport these totemic garments of second-classness. Rapes go up. Assaults similarly ascend. The hijab is a garment that drags in a skirt of exclusivity and entitlement that bears nothing but horror, once adopted.
