Reader comment on item: "Islam" Does Not Mean "Peace"
in response to reader comment: Do you really know what is a dhimmi?

I have been thinking about this little battle we've been having and it occured to me that we have a real opportunity to turn this whole Jihad business around. The same fervour that we see in the Muslim community can be used for a constructive purpose as well as a destructive one.. We just have to out think the jihadis.

I"ve spent a lot of time thinking about matters of the spirit and the spiritual dimension of human existence and it has occured to me that there is a dimensiion of truth in all of the religious visions regardless of who had them or where or when they occured in history. Religion is a social phenomenon. It is something that speaks to the most basic elements of our existence: Who are we, what are we, and why are we here.

I start with the basic truths that we all share in common: (1) we are all human beings. (2) We all live together on the same planet. (3) Our lives are in some better part interdependent because of our common humanity(4) If we do not resolve our differences as a species then we will end up on the garbage heap of history. We will be an evolutionary failure.

I look at the world around me and I realize that there is a need for a paradigm shift in language if we are going to be able to solve the really big problems that face us in the world today. We've got to throw out old and outmoded concepts such as race and the various "isms" and "ities" that have plagued human dialogue for the past two thousand years. We have to trancend the book and stop living in the past

Religion, if it is anything, must come from within the being of the individual. It cannot be imposed from without. So long as our focus is outward we do not really see the truth of our own existence. We must look within ourselves for the answers we seek. When our foccus is on the supposed miracles of the Church or the Mosque we fail to recognize the miracle of our mere existence. Have you ever just sat and thought about the fact that you exist at all? How wonderful is that? If you think about it you will realize that the mere fact of your existence is a miracle. What more do you need? Do you need some kind of pop boom show to show you that you are alive?
