Reader comment on item: "Islam" Does Not Mean "Peace"
in response to reader comment: Islam means surrender

Submitted by Angela Class (United States), Jun 12, 2007 at 19:07

There is no argument here about the "literal" meaning of any of those words.

Everyone has conceded that "Islam" means "submission", or as you say "surrender"

in it's direct and most basic translation(s).

Interestingly, these words don't mean exactly the same thing in English, they're not absolute synonyms, so I would think you, too, may get into a big argument with Dhimmi about how two words can't mean the same thing. Or one word can't mean two things. He has a very hard time accepting these things.

It's a psychological issue, apparently having to do with his ancestors somehow.

But I wouldn't want to bore you with any more knowledge or anything like that, when your little brains are already so full. or at least, so closed.

So, we're all right as far as these translations go, but for the purposes of this discussion it doesn't get us very far at all.

This insistence on absolute literalism in discussing the translation and interpretation of a word from a religious text written in an ancient, abstract, and symbolic language is obtuse and I'm sure intentionally so.

I want to believe that. Because I find it hard to believe anyone could be so thick- headed.

And here I find two of you, who can't understand the concept of a metaphor, on the same blog.

You're such scholars!

Now that you feel so confident about your Arabic, maybe you'd like to learn some more useful things, like critical thinking skills!

So , thank you for the basic grammar lesson. Unfortunately that's not very useful here.

You're telling us something we already know...
