For the readers of the thread: The words islam and salam revisited

Reader comment on item: "Islam" Does Not Mean "Peace"

Submitted by dhimmi no more (United States), Jun 16, 2007 at 13:06

Dr. Pipes you are very correct that the words salam and islam have nothing in common except they come from a common root (SLM) but they belong to two different stem (yislam or yif3al and yusalim or yufa3il) and in the Arabic language this indeed what makes all the difference.

And if we are to believe Muslims who tell us that the word Islam really means salam because they both belong to the same root SLM we must also say that the stems yistaslim (he surrenders), yastalim (he receives), yusalim (he provides peace), yislam (he becomes Mulism) have the same meaning or he becomes muslim means he surrenders and it also means he provides peace and it also means he receives which is nothing but a joke. Or salam, islam, istislam and istilam (peace, Islam, surrendering, receiving) are similar words which is far from the truth.
