Moslem vs. Catholic Arabs

Reader comment on item: The Enemy Within [and the Need for Profiling]

Submitted by G.C. Colan, Esq (United States), Jan 24, 2003 at 17:26

Your article "The Enemy Within" [1/24/03] is right on the money but omits one very important fact: a great many Arabs in this country are Christians and many are anti-Islamic because of the persecution endured by these Christians in primarily Islamic countries.

I learned about this firsthand when one of my lawyer friends entered into a partnership with another lawyer whom I did not know. When I finally met him, I knew him to be an Arab immediately. Not only did he look Arab, but also had a common Arab surname. As a Jew and a Zionist, I really didn't know how to socialize with him so we usually talked about Egyptian civilization (he's Egyptian).

Finally, I one day saw this lawyer cross himself and asked him why he did that. He told me that he came from a family of practicing Catholics and that he was one too. When I started to talk to him about Arab Moslems, he went ballistic.

He told me that his group in Egypt was even smaller than the Jews and was much more persecuted than the Jews over the centuries. A lot of other things he said about Arab Moslems you cannot print, but use your imaginations!

These Arabs in the U.S. are our friends and should be treated as such.

Daniel Pipes replies:

My article is about Islamists without regard to their ethnic origins or racial identity. Christian Arabs are as irrelevant to my analysis as Chinese Buddhists.
