What is an Islamist?

Reader comment on item: The Enemy Within [and the Need for Profiling]

Muslims, by definition, believe in Islam. One of Islam's goals is to propagate Islam to the whole world. Islam teaches that any method of accomplishing that end is justified, although the hierarchy begins with peaceful, non-violent methods and escalates from there.

'Islamists' are the ones who believe that the peaceful methods do not work. The vast majority of Muslims do not object to the 'Islamist' methods because their goals are the same.

Some young Saudis told me while I lived there in the 90's that Osama bin Laden is such a hero to them because he puts the rhetoric of the teachings they get into action.

Most Muslims are on the thin edge between the peaceful and militant methods of accomplishing 'Umra'. Nigeria demonstrated that it is not that difficult to tip the scales.

It is rightly so that Muslims should be held under close scrutiny.
