Reader comment on item: The Enemy Within [and the Need for Profiling]

Submitted by Daniel Potter, M.A. (United States), Jan 26, 2003 at 17:17

Dr. Pipes,
I saw you on Fox News this afternoon (about this article), and wanted to drop a line about that which you stated, and if I understand you correctly; America needs to do whatever it takes to get this terror business behind us. I believe that is true.

Additionally, I don't know of too many other religious groups that have/are targeting American citizens for death. Aren't the politicians required by law and by their oaths, to defend and protect America, and dosen't that mean ALL of the Americans? I think so -- and as so many of the militant Muslims have called us infidels, and that we are the enemy, I think that Washington must do whatever it takes to keep us safe, and to have no more 9/11s.

Haven't we lost over a half million Americans in wars during the last one hundred years defending America? Can we not continue to defend ourselves as we have all along?

Anyone who believes that all of this political correctness will lead to a world/nation without discrimination must also believe in the tooth ferry; it's just not going to happen.

Human nature being what it is, there will always be some discrimination amongst us. Starting with the very smallest of those deeds, we discriminate when we buy Coke rather that Pepsi, and going to a larger version such as selecting where we live... These things are all done every day of the year, and no one gripes too much about it. Therefore, I say that every available means must be utilized. Saving lives is what counts, not political correctness.

Sincerely, Daniel Potter, Santa Rosa, California
