Reader comment on item: Solving the "Palestinian Problem" [with the No-State Solution]

Submitted by John W. McGinley (United States), Jan 7, 2009 at 14:06

Much like Plato's Republic it looks good on paper. But it won't work "on the ground." At some point a critical mass was reached -- certainly by 1975 -- when the "Arabs who lived in the area called "Palestine" before the events of 1947/1948 came to be perceived by themselves and by the world as "The Palestinian People." An artificial development, to be sure, but one which is not going to go away. It's already too late for the best theoretical solution to obtain. The cat's aready out of the bag.

In saying the following I am assuming that in the first year of the Obama Administration Israel, with tacit support from the United States, will take out Iran's nuclear capability. Iran will impose punishing casualties on the Israeli population (and, incidentally, on the "Palestinian" population) and in return Israel will respond with punishing casualties on the Iranian population. When the dust settles (such will take about two years) the logic of exhaustion will imose itself on all parties and an initially fragile but ultimately successful "two-state" solution will obtain. It will then be the case that Israel will have its true testing.

The ultimate challenge to Israel's viability is one which is already eroding "Israel" (I.e., the People, the Nation, the Religion) from the inside. The prognosis is somber indeed and the cure for Its internal disease has nothing to do with Merkabah tanks. An intelligent "teshuvah" is the only cure possible. "Return, O Backsliding Children."
