Reader comment on item: May an American Comment on Israel?

Submitted by Victor Gordon (South Africa), Jul 28, 2008 at 15:07

Contrary to the contention that only an Israeli living in the country has the right to comment on the actions taken, it is my contention that living in the Diaspora affords one the advantage of seeing beyond the apparent myopia that appears to beset so many Israeli leaders and commentators.

I have read as many views about the Kuntar exchange that I am able to absorb and, while many offer an argument that lends support to the so-called "moral" victory that Israel earned from "behaving in a civilised manner", as opposed to the barbaric display that we witnessed in Lebanon, I have yet to feel comfortable with any view other than that Kuntar should have also been handed back to his bretheren in a body bag.

I find it strange that Israel found a way to justify hanging Adolf Eichmann when it was faced with that issue of retribution but seem powerless to act in a similar, forceful manner when faced with cold-blooded murderers like Kuntar. Suddenly we must remember to be a light unto the nations in the face of nations who show total distain for the light we offer.

Am I missing something ?
