Reader comment on item: May an American Comment on Israel?

Submitted by Rebecca Moulds (United States), Jul 28, 2008 at 09:00

We in the West are free to comment on any subject or analyse a situation whenever or wherever we please, so it is almost comical that Yoram Schweitzer would like to deny Daniel Pipes that same freedom. Dr. Pipes usually hits the nail on the head in his column, not only presenting intelligent analysis, but also exposing the chinks in the armours of foreign governments.

No stranger to the Israeli political scene and the Middle East in general, Dr. Pipes' commentaries are pertinent and refreshing in a world where political correctness seems to matter more than the truth. That Samir el-Kuntar's release was a victory for Hizbullah remains to be seen; but it is truly a humiliating defeat for Israel. When Israel does something that provokes outrage and criticism from other countries, that criticism should be welcomed rather than hushed. We are supposed to learn from our mistakes, something that Israel should pay more attention to.

Daniel Pipes is a provoker of thought, and in that position he has used his power wisely. It is possible to support Israel and condemn some of her decisions, but within that criticism is genuine concern for her well-being. However, it is impossible to keep silent and give blind support when grave mistakes are made in the name of "peace at any price."
