Reader comment on item: Why the Japanese Internment Still Matters
in response to reader comment: JAPANESE RELOCATION MYTH BAINBRIDGE ISLAND, WA

Submitted by Student (United States), Feb 25, 2007 at 17:54

As a student of Sonoji Sakai Intermidiate school on Bainbridge Island, Washinton, I was outraged at the misunderstanding and idiocy in which Mr. Olsen discribed the Leaving our Island curriculum. I found the whole unit fresh and enjoyable. We learned many important facts about the charecter of the unprovoked hatered and prejudice of the American society against the Japanese Americans, who, incidentally were never found guilty of assisting or spying for the Japanese. Mr.Olsen calls the unit 'unpatriotic', which is absolutely ridiculous! The Japanese Americans were just as loyal to the USA as the caucasian people were. Mr. Olsen also ignores the fact that much of the unit was spent studying the history of the holocaust, and the battles.

You, Mr. Olsen have obviously ignored the rights of the American citizen written in the Habea Corpus which allows every American citizen to have a fair trial before being dragged off to prison. The law was ingnored in the case of the Japanese Americans. If that action is 'patriotic' to you, Mr. Olsen, then you are no true American. You refer to the relocation as a 'myth'. It was anything but. Have you, Mr. Olsen, ever been evacuated from your home, told to only bring the bare nececessities and taken to a destination completely unknown to you, where often the weather was so horrible that many compare it to the dust bowl? I think not. And if so, what gives you the athority to write so harshly about the curriculum, which consists of completely true facts about the homefront horrors of Bainbridge Island? I feel lucky to be expiriencing this highly educational unit and sad that you do not have enough empathy to even understand.
