Japanese Internment is Racially Motivated Unless...

Reader comment on item: Why the Japanese Internment Still Matters

Submitted by Stanley L. Alekman (United States), Dec 28, 2004 at 17:07

The US interned only the Japanese. We did not intern the Germans and the Italians, the other Axis countries with which we were at war. There were public demonstrations of sympathy for Nazi Germany by German Americans in the US yet we never felt threatened by them and there was no internment. The newspapers at the time reported these demonstrations of support. To support internment for the Japanese Americans and not German and Italian Americans can be construed as racially motivated. There are many examples of Japanese American support of the US during the war. Some fought in the US military. The facts cited in Pipes' article have counterparts in the German American community at the time.
