I totally disagree

Reader comment on item: Why the Japanese Internment Still Matters

Submitted by Tzvi Tamari (Canada), Dec 28, 2004 at 13:27

For once I totally disagree with you. The internment of ethnic Japanese was almost totally based on racial prejudice, here in Canada for certain, when there was not one instance of collaboration. If it was not racial prejudice, please account for the fact that thousands of ethnic Germans were never interned, and in Canada there were many, many instances of German Canadians spying for Nazi Germany. These people didn't get a slap on the wrist, whereas ethnic Japanese both here and in the U.S. were conscripted and fought in all the theatres of that war. Japanese Canadian soldiers were among the most decorated in WWII while their parents and relatives sat in internment camps. Two atomic bombs on civilians! Those responsible for ordering those bombs to be dropped should have been tried in war crimes court. That nonsenical excuse was that it shortened the war. Rubbish! Japan as you well know with all of its raw materials and food stuffs cut off by the Allies, would have been starved into submission, without subjecting the Allies to any additional casualties, nor the Japanese civilians.
