I remember Pearl Harbor vividly...

Reader comment on item: Why the Japanese Internment Still Matters

Submitted by Janyce Jacobs (United States), Dec 28, 2004 at 10:51

I was 15 years old, a Junior in High School (Broadway) Seattle, WA, on Dec. 7, 1941.

It was a very frightening time. My brother-in-law was a regular Navy Doctor and he asked me to stay up with him in case we were attacked. In the Japanese Shinto Community there was great rejoicing. They were setting off fireworks and ,in general,
thought they had won the war.

On the other hand, the Nesei (mostly Christian) were very subdued. They were eager to be cleared by the government so that they could go to war and fight for the United States.

There is a lot more to the story, but I'm packing to go on a trip. I am happy that the truth about internment is finally coming forth so that we can use profiling as a tool in the current war.
