Reader comment on item: Why the Japanese Internment Still Matters

Submitted by C.G. Atkins (United States), Dec 8, 2007 at 20:32

I agree with Bryan Lee, who said the following:
"...That horrible mistake in US history was indeed a result of wartime hysteria, mostly to quell the white masses from fearing the Japanese Americans, a majority of who displayed sincere patriotism to America. Before the Japanese Americans were moved to the camps, the FBI released a statement that clearly explained that an investigation of Japanese Americans has revealed that there is no visible threat of espionage. In fact all the hysteria that Japanese Americans were spies were all rumors. But this did not stop the systemic racism of US society to fear those of color. If Japanese internment was so necessary, why was there no German internment?

...If your America is indeed the land of the free then we should be doing our best to protect the actual rights and liberties of everyone, even Muslims! Of course security measures are important, but not at the expense of destroying the freedom of this country we worked so hard to get.

On another note, Stanford's survey may have shown that the majority of Americans believe security should target Muslims, but one should also not how this ignorant majority voted in Bush, resulting in the degeneration of this country. A large percentage of this country is indeed ignorant and it would be great if we could just use a percentage of the resources for war and apply it to education. Maybe we'd finally get passed our elementary school mentality that fighting doesn't solve everything."...
