Is that what they mean by freedom?

Reader comment on item: Why the Japanese Internment Still Matters

Submitted by Stuart Dryer (United States), Dec 31, 2004 at 11:55

In the United States of America we do not "register the whereabouts" of citizens who have not commited a crime on the sole basis of their ethnicity, religion, or appearance.

The horrific terrorist attacks on 9/11 were committed by Saudis, which Mr. Pipes and Ms. Malkin take as justification for monitoring of Muslims. On that basis, we should also "register the whereabouts" of white males with radical Christian beliefs, because these kind of people fit the profile of the perpetrators of the Oklahoma City bombings.

Ms. Malkin, Mr. Pipes, and their colleagues often talk about the "freedoms" that we enjoy in America, and how our troops are fighting in defense of "freedom". I wonder what they possibly mean by that word when they write in defense of internment camps. They will probably accuse me of being a "leftist" but I invite any of you to read the Constitution and then ask which of us is espousing the more radical belief. . .Although I disagree strongly with their arguments, I believe in true freedom, so I am glad that Pipes and Malkin are able to write and publish their views and have them read. ...
