Moral Dimension

Reader comment on item: My Peace Plan: An Israeli Victory

Submitted by Edward Halper (United States), Apr 30, 2010 at 12:19

One reason that victory over the Germans was complete is that the Germans came quickly to realize the moral turpitude of their Nazi government. Israel had a thorough victory over the Arabs in 1967, but their was no Arab recognition of the immorality of trying to destroy Israel and subject its people. On the contrary, the morality Arabs claimed for their cause was endorsed by the Left, by the EU, and by many others. All this, plus continued EU aid, was a decisive obstacle to Arab negotiation. It is disturbing and hypocritical that otherwise rational people condemn Israel for military actions it takes to protect its citizens for unprovoked attacks, an end that are part of the purposed of any government. Goldstone, Obama's condemnation of Israeli housing development, the International Court, etc. all serve to prevent Palestinians from negotiating.

Moral right alone will not bring Israel success. It must convince the world and, most importantly, the Arabs that morality is on its side. It is then that the sort of military victory advocated in this article could effectively resolve the problem.
