question to Dr Pipes: the symbols on the referendum posters, any historical parallel ?

Reader comment on item: Swiss Minarets and European Islam

Submitted by myth (Germany), Dec 12, 2009 at 06:19

What struck me most was the symbolism exposed in the posters supporting the referendum. I think this topic deserves analysis: There is the white on red cross, clearly a symbol of christianity on the swiss flag. Many minarets on top of that flag signal domination by means of arrangement and number. It is many minarets on top of one cross. The tactical arrangement of minarets even hints at some military quality of the domination. A black veiled woman somewhat on the margin of the picture but big, comparable to the size of the cross. Meaning that the role of a woman in Islam manifests the biggest conflict with christian identity. The colour black suggests evil. The poster by its symbolism says: domination of islam in christian Switzerland supresses women. I find this a statement of unexpected clarity.

Here's my question to Dr Pipes: Is there any historical record of such symbolism in the western world ?

Daniel Pipes replies:

I would be inclined to see the poster a bit differently, as minarets threatening like missiles and the covered woman off to the side as an additional reason to vote against Islam and Muslims.

I do not recall any such symbolism but that is far from a definitive reply. Perhaps readers can help here.
