Recently I read something I had not seen before. That if we 'cut and run' from Iraq, it will leave an Iraq vulnerable to Iran - to resume and win the Iran-Iraq War. With a large Shi-ite poplulation in Iran who might support them - driven by the sectarian violance in Iraq now, and likelihood that Iran is supplying insurgents, this scenario seems highly probable and scary. It would likely have major impacts on the world's oil supply and place them in a predominant power position in the Middle East. With Nuclear weapons at their disposal, it's a nightmare scenario.
