Afghanistan again?

Reader comment on item: In Iraq, Stay the Course - but Change It

Submitted by Safraz (United States), Oct 24, 2006 at 13:56

The United States not only has a moral responsibility to rebuild Iraq but also has security interest in doing so? Are we to allow it to become another Afghanistan - abandoned after a foreign invasion only to become a breeding ground for terrorists? I think not.

The voter turnout in the Iraq elections are reason enough to give us hope that people will believe in the system if they have reason to. When democracy begins providing them with security and economic prosperity, they will embrace it. The problem is getting to the security and economic prosperity - and abandoning Iraq as this point will not get us any closer to to solving this problem.

Talks of withdrawing, even to the desert, only spurs on the insurgent movements mainly because the common man is afraid of U.S. abandonment and so will not come out in support of the U.S. for fear of retribution after the U.S. pullout.
