Daniel, I would respectfully suggest that the "final" goal is not to bring on the Mahdi, but rather that this is an early goal in Iran's plan.

The final goal is to make everywhere dar al islam by enabling the unimpeded spread of dar al islam

How will this be done? Several steps seem likely to be planned:

1) Preparation of the Islamic masses for meeting the expected hardships of total war (in a zero-sum, Clausewitzian sense) against Western Civilization with jihadi fervor, through mass-indoctrination in mahdian eschatology and appeals to former Islamic glory and current affronts.

2) Strategic shift from the use of the jihad of words to the jihad of blood. The parallel and recent escalation in confrontational rhetoric of both Osama and Mahmoud have become eerily similar in both emotional triggers (mahdi-madness, America is accused as the evil murderer of Moslems, "Palestine"), tactical methodology (nuclear weapons) and grand strategic goals (destroy America, destroy Israel, rule the world and live happily ever after in a Talibany-sort-of-way). This also seems a qualitative change in style of rhetoric, probably an early indicator of the upcoming switch from use of the jihad of words to the jihad of blood. This is enabled by #1, above.

3) Through Osama's well-planned and carefully designed strategy of a crippling nuclear assault on America, which Iran has now joined in on as a corporate sponsor and is pursuing aggressively. The stage is set for this by #1 and #2.

4) The destruction of America as a global power, via #3.

5) Destruction of Israel, imagined as helpless once shorn of her American protection, via #4.

6) Unimpeded spread of dar al islam, once the final bastion of Islam's great historical nemesis, Christianity, is no longer the only superpower, or even a major global power and the destruction of the land of Islam's recent humiliators, the Jews, via #4 and #5.
