Just because we don't have overt signs of totalitarianism doesn't mean it's not here. Illegal wiretaps, an archipelago of black sites around the world with many innocent people incarcerated without trial (and granted some potentially guilty of terrorist offences) and redefinitions of torture that fogs the issue of what is legal and what isn't are current manifestations of the misuse of power in America.

But there are other signs: Outing of Agents for revenge (Valerie Plame), lethargic response to the natural disaster in the south, stifling of dissent, compliant media, selective application of international law (Enforcing UN resolutions on Iraq is ok, enforcing them on Israel is not) and glossing over of improprieties commited by party faithful (Rove, Abramoff, DeLay). This is not faux totalitarianism. It is not aggressive self-defence. It is real. It is dangerous. Not just for America but for the world.

Alas Rob. I'm not that JK :-(
