in response to reader comment: "A global confrontation between the US and most of the rest of the world? "

Myth, I never said that there wasn't a confrontation betweeen the US and the Islamists of the world, only that I don't want to provoke a confrontation with other major world powers like Russia and China, both of whom support the Iranian nuclear program and already have nuclear arms. How does the prospect of a nuclear exchange with them sound for you? Venezuela also supports the nuclear program, and we are still dependent on oil exports from that country: we can't just ask the Saudis to produce another 3 million barrels a day if Venezuela cuts its oil supply to the US in response. How does the prospect of sliding back into a major recession sound for you?

The only viable alternative is covert support for an attack on Iran's nuclear facilities by Balochi insurgents (the Jundallah, the Balochi National Liberation Army et al.- Jundallah are a Sunni Islamist group, but I don't mind unleashing them on Iran where there isn't a large Sunni minority), whose campaign for an independent Balochistan would also serve our interests (e.g. access to some of the world's largest copper and gold reserves).

Also, Dr. Pipes' idea that a strike on Iran's nuclear facilities would somehow divert attention from issues like health care ... has become too big an issue to ignore now.
